West Park District

Circle 10 Council

Along with a newly updated Boy Scout Handbook, what's happening in Boy Scouting is more of a slight modification than a complete overhaul for 2016:

  • Boys joining on or after Jan 1, 2016 MUST use the new requirements.
  • Boys who have joined prior to Jan 1, 2016.
    • Who are working on the Scout badge MAY continue to work on the existing requirements, but MUST convert to the new requirements upon completion of the Scout badge.
    • Who are working on Tenderfoot through First Class MAY continue to work on the existing requirements, but MUST convert to the new requirements upon attaining First Class.
    • Who have completed First Class MAY complete the rank they are currently working on in the existing requirements, but then MUST convert to the new requirements for subsequent ranks.

For 2017:

  • All Scouts MUST use the new requirements regardless of rank.

    • Service at all ranks (conservation-related at Life)
    • Healthy eating/habits requirements
    • Some reordering in Tenderfoot to First Class
    • Physical fitness at each rank, Tenderfoot to First Class
    • Outdoor ethics — Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly
    • Weather safety, risk assessment and mitigation

Gold Rush 2015

The Gold Rush was a fabulous event on September 26.  We want everyone to thank the leaders, venturers and OA that made the event possible and to remember the great sponsors that supplied the food.  J Bar B foods and Mrs Bairds were so generous to contribute the 1500 Hot Dogs and we all love Hot Dogs!

Order of the arrow

The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It uses American Indian-styled traditions and ceremonies to bestow recognition on scouts selected by their peers as best exemplifying the ideals of Scouting.

BeAScout.org:  This is a great tool for all units to use to get their unit information to all those who visit BeAScout.org and might be looking for a new unit to join.

It’s a recruiting campaign that allows parents to find units in their neighborhoods using a Google map tool. Unit leaders can manage their Google pin information and also manage their leads from BeAScout.

To update a unit's information, the leader from that unit should go to myscouting.org, log into his/her account and follow the link "BeAScout" under "unit tools" to update the unit  pin information.

''[Malone] wrote how the image of Eagle Scouts has risen over the decades...I could not agree more.''

—Robert J. Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive, Boy Scouts of America (Retired)

Four Percent is one of the most complete histories of the Boy Scouts of America ever written and the first to focus on the remarkable story of Eagle Scouts. Award-winning author Michael S. Malone, himself an Eagle, brings the eye of a veteran journalist to a story that for too long has been wrapped in myth and prejudice and uncovers one of the most important, but least celebrated, movements in modern American history.

Purchase the book on Amazon, or in your local Scout Shop.

"The Eagle's service project is the single greatest youth-service initiative in history, and one that has touched every

community in America in an important way."

                                                                                                    —Michael S. Malone

West Park District is incredibly privileged to have the very first release of The Eagle Scout Handbook: From Life to Eagle,

written by Michael S. Malone, award-winning author and two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee. Himself an Eagle, Malone

brings the eye of a veteran journalist to clarify the Life to Eagle process with his unique view.

This is a MUST download for Scoutmasters, Committee Chairman, and Life to Eagle candidates, and is a free and complimentary download made possible by Michael S. Malone, David C. Scott, and WindRush Publishers of Dallas.
